Seagate first in the 1TB/disk race…so what?

Today, Seagate announced the release of the industry’s first 1TB per disk 3.5-inch hard drive. It just so happens to be disguised as a GoFlex Desk external hard drive.

You may say, “so what?”

So…there are huge implications for the 3.5-inch hard drive market in any aerial density improvement such as this.  Implications like:

  • 1TB single platter hard drives
  • 2TB dual platter hard drives
  • 3TB three platter hard drives

And, generally speaking, the less the number of platters…

  • The better the overall performance and…
  • …the better the overall value for the customer

You may still say, “so what…I want an internal hard drive. When will that be available?”

So…the press release says “mid-2011″, and since we are already in the 5th month of the year (scary thought), we can assume mid means within the next 3 months. Anything August onward flirts with “late-2011″.  The good news is that the technology is here, and that 3.5-inch hard drive aerial density has improved which is great for customers that crank out and/or store a ton of content. It’s just a matter of time before the rest of the hard drive market catches up.

In any case…Bigger, faster, better?

Sounds good to me.
